After an absence of 35 years, the city of Granada has a football team in La Liga. Last night Granada CF won a place in the top flight of Spanish football. This is a momentous moment for sport in the city of Granada. Next season Granada will entertain clubs such as Real Madrid and the Champions of Europe, FC Barcelona.
Five years ago I was watching Granada CF with a few hundred other people. You could sit where you liked. Those selling scarves, badges etc would set up a trestle table of souvenirs outside the ground about an hour before kick off. You could easily get served at the excellent bars close to the ground, some of which feature in the Tapas Tour guidebook for sale on this site.
The quality of football was poor and the pitch was dire. Grass was nowhere to be seen.
Now the big time beckons for Granada CF. Last night 25.000 people partied on the streets of the city. It's not just the players, club and fans that are winners.
Football tourism is big business. Many people will travel far and wide to see top flight football played in Spain. Having a football team in La Liga is guaranteed to bring more visitors to the city of Granada.
A city which has always been in the Premier League of Spanish destinations. Now it has a football team worthy of such a great city.
Be afraid Real Madrid! Bring on Barcelona!
